Benchmark Builders is a private, employee-owned construction company established in October 2016, located in Uitzicht, Durbanville, serving the Western Cape.
Our Company
Benchmark Builders is a private, employee-owned construction company established in October 2016 serving the Western Cape. The company is run and managed by two directors, Jean Kotze and Winslow Hare, with a combined construction experience of over 50 years.
DOSWAD “Doing something with a difference”, Benchmark Builders will ensure the construction of foundations that will stand the test of time and, being committed to superior quality and results, with our hands-on Directorship on all our projects, we will deliver the client’s vision into unique spaces during the construction period.
Benchmark Builders is registered with the NHBRC to ensure that all residential projects comply with the latest building regulations. Our management is registered with the SACPCMP to ensure professional construction management skills and access to further accredited courses to increase and grow our managerial skills within our staff allotments.
All construction sites start each day with Toolbox talks and DSTI’s (Daily Site Task Instructions). Toolbox talks ensure that all construction workers follow basic safety procedures. DSTI’s are reviewed at that the end of each day and updated for the following day. This hands-on practical method approach to site management has been proven to be the most effective and is fundamental to delivering quality buildings within the agreed project contractual period.
Benchmark Builders is currently busy with new residential structures and alterations to existing residential structures. Commercial office and warehouse upgrades have also been done and joint venture agreements have been put in place to construct larger commercial projects with two well-known large established CIDB category 8 construction companies.

Jean and Winslow manage their staff and team of well respected and established contractors in a hands-on manner, taking personal responsibility to deliver quality building work, to the client’s specifications, in budget and on time.
Our Team
Jean Kotze
Operations Director
Jean has 18+ years onsite experience on small to large commercial projects. He has a B.Eng Civil/Structural degree from Stellenbosch University and uses his knowledge and experience from his many years in the industry in carrying out on-site project management.
Jean has international experience from when he worked in the United Kingdom where he learned to build and manage projects according to the BS Standard on the River Thames Water project and the construction of Heathrow Terminal 5 in London.
As a Construction Manager in South Africa he has managed and overseen multi-million Rand construction projects that include new retail centres, warehouses, multi-storey residential flats, the BMW Motor Showroom & Service Centre, Cape Town International Airport’s Multi-storey Parking, and the Pick n Pay distribution centre.
He also managed the construction and import of all materials from multiple countries to construct a new shopping mall in Malawi with 82 line shops and Shoprite as the anchor tenant.
Currently Jean Kotze is managing the construction sites and assisting with the financials and cost control of work done by appointed companies to ensure Benchmark Builders continue to adapt their operation and tender procedures to meet the current needs of the construction market.
Winslow Hare
Contracts Director
Winslow has 35+ years onsite experience. In 1984 he completed a 3 year Construction Carpentry Apprenticeship and relevant certifications with Murray & Roberts. During the years that followed he has worked his way up through the ranks into managerial positions and eventually to manage his own large construction sites.
Some of the projects he has managed include The Junction Mall in Philippi, Woolworths Distribution Centre in Montague Gardens, Pick’n’Pay Distribution Centre and Offices in Philippi, Kuilsrivier Primary School, Barlow World Toyota, Montessori Private School, 3 x ASIDI A4 Schools, Du Noon Health Care Facility, Sandowns Retail Crossing Shopping Centre , Palmyra Road Retail Centre (Woolworths and Office Block), Shoprite in Burgundy Estate, Central Park (6 floor office block) in Century City and Mfuleni Shopping Centre.
Over his many years of experience Winslow has cultivated good relationships with all the professional teams and consultants appointed to the specific projects. He has also managed to always built a good rapport with workers, tradesman and subcontractors and be able to motivate them to deliver their best quality works.
Currently Winslow is managing all the offsite meetings with clients and developers and assisting the professional consultants with any queries, as well as establishing opportunities for future developments. He also assists Jean with current projects to ensure quality and agreed construction periods are delivered on time to the Clients.
